|Division Teacher of the Year Tara Hefner Selected as Region III State Finalist |
Tara Hefner, a second grade teacher at Courtland Elementary School and Spotsylvania County Public Schools’ (SCPS) 2013-2014 Division Teacher of the Year, was notified she was selected as the 2014 Region 3 Teacher of the Year during a surprise visit by SCPS Superintendent Dr. S. Scott Baker and School Board Chair Amanda Blalock on September 19, 2013.
Mrs. Hefner is in her fifth year of teaching. She has taught in Spotsylvania County Public Schools since 2011. Mrs. Hefner was selected from division teachers of the year from the northeastern and Northern Neck area of the state. Mrs. Hefner will be honored along with the other 7 finalists in Richmond on October 11 at the Board of Education and Department of Education’s banquet and awards ceremony. Virginia’s Teacher of the Year, chosen from the eight regional teachers, will be announced that evening.

Berkeley, Salem & Lee's Hill Candidate Forum October 24
The Spotsylvania Education Association and the Spotsylvania Branch NAACP will host a local candidates forum for the districts of Battlefield, Berkley, and Lee’s Hill on October 24, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at John J. Wright Educational & Cultural Center located at 7565 Courthouse Road. This is your opportunity to meet your candidates and ask questions.
Impact Aid Forms Due October 10
On October 3rd, Impact Aid Forms will be sent home with your child. If your child did not bring an Impact Aid form home you may download the form below.
Under the Impact Aid Program, each locality is compensated for federally connected children who impact a school district’s financial base because of military bases, federal installations, or federal activity within and surrounding their locality.
If you are a parent in military service or if you are employed on federal property, by completing an Impact Aid form for each child in your household, you will enable Spotsylvania County Public Schools to receive additional revenue assistance through the Impact Aid Program, which helps support educational programs for our students.
The Spotsylvania County Public Schools Virtual Pilot Program is a K-2 online academic program for students who have been home-schooled for the previous academic year, have not been enrolled, or were not eligible for enrollment in Spotsylvania County Public Schools during the previous academic year.
Spotsylvania County Public Schools is offering an information session about Spotsylvania K2 Virtual on August 23, 2013 at the School Board Office, 8020 River Stone Drive Fredericksburg, VA 22407 beginning at 7:00 P.M.

VA Special Education 2013 Survey
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires each state to submit a special education State Performance Plan (SPP) and Annual Performance Report (APR) to the U.S. Department of Education. One of the indicators in the Performance Plan requires states to report: Percent of parents with a child receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.
